當我們進食的時候,我們腸道裡的大腸桿菌也接收了養分。大腸桿菌在接收到養分後會開始大量的繁殖,在這個繁殖經過20分鐘後,大腸桿菌的數量會到一個臨界值而且停止繼續增生。當大腸桿菌停止增生後,他們會開始製造一種特殊的蛋白質,這種蛋白質會影響膽囊裡的內分泌細胞,促使膽囊分泌一種賀爾蒙。這種賀爾蒙在大腦裡形成一種訊號,這個訊號告訴大腦我們已經吃飽了,如此一來,我們就會停止進食。
研究員把這種蛋白質注射到老鼠體內,他們發現老使每一餐的進食量確實的減少了。在得知這樣的現象後,我們可以加以運用在促進健康上。藉由這種特殊蛋白質形成的連續反應可以讓我們的飲食量得到控制。我認為,這對於暴食症患者的治療會有幫助,因為暴食症患者無法控制食慾,即使胃袋已經滿了還是沒有"吃飽"的感覺。雖然科學家在近期內不會嘗試將這種蛋白質直接注入人體,但是我相信相關的應用是可以被期待的。
