Science and Religion

Science and religion are often claimed to be in conflict. Some people who believe in science think that there's no god, believing that everything can be explained by science. They don't believe in mysterious or supernatural force because they think they don't exist. Some people who believe in religion believe that god created everything. They believe that supernatural force exists, which is the sign that proves the existence of gods and spirits. When these two different kinds of people meet each other, an inevitable conflict may arise. Is this conflict real and irreconcilable, or is it a result of misunderstanding the different natures of science and religion?

In my opinion, there should be no conflicts between science and religion. Science and religion are two different belief systems. In science, people make observations and try to create a testable hypothesis to explain the phenomena that are observed. The explanation for observed phenomena must be logical and based on hard evidence. Hypothesis and models must be able to make precise predictions, or the hypothesis and the models should be revised or abandoned. In religion, on the other hand, people also make observations and try to explain them. However, their explanations may not be logical and are not based on hard evidence most of the time.  You can see that the natures of science and religions are very different. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean that there are conflicts between them. They are two distinct systems. You can take them as two different objects on the table, some people choose to pick one of them, while some people choose to pick the other. In my opinion, conflicts exist in the people who believe in theses two different systems. Their argument is no different from the people who argue that is chocolate ice cream better or vanilla ice cream. The people who believe in science just like people who like chocolate ice cream. Some of them say that people who believe vanilla ice cream is the best are wrong. No matter how people argue about chocolate ice cream and vanilla ice cream, these two kinds of ice cream don't conflict each other. Hence, I believe that conflicts only exist between people who believe in science and religion.

I just talk about the very distinct natures of science and religion, but does it mean that the people who believe in science don't believe in god at all? To many people's surprise, there's one famous scientist who believes the existence of god. That person is the famous Albert Einstein. He believes that something created the order of the universe. Whatever he is studying is related to a higher being.
He once said "I want to know how god created this world. I am not interesting in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this and that element. I want to know his thoughts; the rest are details." From this statement, we can know Einstein's opinion on god. This statement also proves that the people who study science may also believe in the existence of god.

  1. You're right. There should be no conflict. Some things are simply not black and white

  2. Hi Wind,

This post reminds me of an "old" movie I saw back in 1997. It's called "Contact," starring Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. You should really check it out. This has always been one of my favorite movies of all time. You'll like it.

  3. Long time no see!
In fact, philosophy offers a explanation that religion is not "knowledge". We define knowledge is those thing we can observe or feel. Religion gives us the imagination of the world after we die. However, it is not acceptable and imagined for most people so it is not a kind of knowledge in our world. Science is the method to analyze knowledge so we cannot use science fact to criticize religion.

    1. True, religion is not a kind of knowledge while science is, so we can't say that religion and science conflict with each other.
