Personality and academic major

Have you ever wondered that if people's academic majors are related to their personality? Do you feel that people in the same academic major are similar some how?.

According to the recent psychology research, scientists found that there are some connections between people's personality and their academic major. To find out the relationship between personality different major, scientists used five traits to measure and describe personality. The five traits are: neuroticism (tendency to experience negative and unstable emotion), extraversion(tendency to experience positive emotion and being active and sociable), openness(curiosity and tolerance for diverse culture and intellectual experience), agrreableness(being friendly, modest, and accommodating), conscientiousness(being dutiful, diligent, and orderly)

Through this test, researchers wanted to find out if student enroll in different majors score differently in five traits test. Or do students enroll in same major have similar result on this test. When scientists collected the result conducted in several countries, the result showed that student in different majors score differently on the test, while the student in the same major score similarly. For example,Psychology and arts/humanities students score high on openness and neuroticism; political science students score high on openness; economics, law, medicine, and political science students score high on extraversion; medicine, psychology, arts/humanities, and science students score high on agreeableness; and arts/humanities students score low on conscientiousness. Although scientists had found the relationship between personality and academic majors, they were not satisfied. They wanted to find out that if this connection is pre-existing or cultivated, because they thought that the interaction between faculties and students may change the personality of students. Therefore, they also did the test on the students who just enroll their major and haven't interacted with faculties. When they compared the result of this test to the previous one, the result were quite similar. Hence, scientists concluded that the relationship between personality and academic majors is pre-existing. The result of this study may be able to apply on education. Since we know that people's personality and the academic major they may choose is related, we may be able to find out what major will a high school student choose by looking at the result of five traits test. In other words, we can make a prediction of one student's future academic major by knowing the student's personality. Once we make the prediction, we can know what this student may interested in, so we can choose what to present to this student. Although there is relationship between personality and academic majors, the result of tests is average. There are some extreme case and divergence in the result, so we don't have to choose our majors based on the personality test.
